Hi Kerri

Try using some shredded cardboard, this will soak up the wet areas and cardboard will not compact like shredded paper does.

You can still use shredded paper, but make sure you mix it with the shredded cardboard. this mixture works very well.

our worm bin never seems to be like soil, it all seems wet and compacted, sticking together. is this because they are not done composting it or too much food. i usually only use shredded paper and a bit of dirt for the bedding. I have had this one going for about 2 months. What should i do to correct the problem?

I'm interested in purchasing a wooden worm bin and after looking over the one listed for sale on your website I have one question. What material was used to make the base of the bin? Is it wood so that one must collect the castings once the worms have migrated to the next level or is it mesh? Thanks, Andrea

Thanks Jeff, for the answer, and thanks Gwen, for the question. I, of course, was wondering the same thing which led me here. I have a five level worm factory that is fairly new but productive enough that I converted an old plastic compost tumbler into a second bin by drilling lots of holes in the top and bottom. It never composted worth a darn but it is booming as a second worm bin. Today I separated my original bin of worms again because of high moisture content in the lowest bin and added lots of dry newspaper strips. I started with two pounds of red wigglers and have what I would guess to be about four pounds after less than 6 weeks. I currently have 4 of the five bins going plus six inches or so int the bottom of a forty gallon composter. Thanks again and "Worm Workers of the World Unite."
I read that worms eat hair and vacuum cleaner bag dust but that seems like animal cruelty to me. Haha, I know it would make me gag.
